An immediate implant placement is defined as an implant placement immediately after tooth extraction. Very often, we are able to both extract a tooth and place an implant on the same day. This option significantly reduces the time that a patient has to wait to have a new tooth or teeth and accelerates the restoration process. In some cases, we may even be able to place a tooth directly on the implant –something that used to take several months and require many visits.
To ensure implant success, care is taken not to damage the surrounding bone tissues during tooth extraction. After tooth extraction, there are also some factors that we have to consider before placing an implant. First of all, there should be adequate bone to support and stabilize the dental implant. In case of bone deficiency, bone augmentation has to be performed. Moreover, we make sure that there are no major infections or soft tissue inflammation present.
If bone grafting has to be done, a 3-4 months healing period is necessary for the bone graft to heal and fuse with the jawbone, before an implant can be placed. However, if the implant is placed immediately, this healing period is completely eliminated.
